Treanda (bendamustine hydrochloride) is prescribed to treat certain types of cancer. The drug comes in forms that a healthcare professional injects into your vein. The dosing schedule depends on the condition the drug is treating.

Treanda is a chemotherapy drug used in adults to treat the following conditions:

The active ingredient in Treanda is bendamustine hydrochloride. It belongs to a group of drugs called alkylating agents.

This article describes the dosages of Treanda, as well as its strengths and how it’s given. To learn more about Treanda, see this in-depth article.

This section describes the usual dosages of Treanda. Keep reading to learn more.

What are Treanda’s forms?

Treanda is available in two forms:

  • solution for intravenous (IV) infusion in single-dose vial
  • powder in single-dose vial for mixing with a liquid to make a solution for IV infusion

An IV infusion is an injection into your vein over a period of time. A healthcare professional gives either form.

What strengths does Treanda come in?

Treanda comes in four strengths, as follows.

  • solution:
    • 45 milligrams (mg) per 0.5 milliliters (mL)
    • 180 mg per 2 mL
  • powder:
    • 25 mg
    • 100 mg

What are the usual dosages of Treanda?

Your dosage of Treanda depends on the following factors:

  • the condition the drug is being used to treat
  • your height
  • your weight
  • treatment cycles that repeat either every 3 weeks or 4 weeks

The information below describes dosages that are commonly used or recommended. Your doctor will determine the best dosage to fit your needs. In some cases, doctors may adjust your dosage from those presented below.

Dosage for CLL

The typical Treanda dosage for adults with CLL follows a 28-day treatment cycle. Your doctor will use your height and weight to calculate your body surface area (BSA) in meters squared (m2). Then they’ll use the result to calculate your dose.

The total dose per cycle is 100 mg per m2 (mg/m2) split into two doses. You receive the first dose on day 1 and the second dose on day 2 of a cycle. Each IV infusion is given over 30 minutes. Based on how you respond to treatment, you may receive up to 6 cycles of treatment.

As an example of the BSA calculation, assume a person’s weight is 141 pounds (lb) and the height is 63 inches (in). Their BSA is approximately 1.67 m2. So their dose for treating CLL would be 167 mg. This would be split into two doses over days 1 and 2 of a cycle.

Your doctor will monitor to see whether you have certain serious side effects or cannot tolerate Treanda. If needed, they may pause your treatment, adjust your dosage, or permanently stop treatment.

If you have questions about your dosage, talk with your doctor to learn more.

Dosage for NHL

The typical Treanda dosage for adults with indolent B-cell NHL follows a 21-day treatment cycle. Your doctor will use your height and weight to calculate your body surface area (BSA) in meters squared (m2). Then they’ll use the result to calculate your dose.

The typical dose per cycle is 120 mg per m2 (mg/m2) split into two doses. You receive the first dose on day 1 and the second dose on day 2 of a cycle. Each IV infusion is given over 60 minutes. Based on how you respond to treatment, you may receive up to 8 cycles of treatment.

As an example of the BSA calculation, assume a person’s weight is 160 pounds (lb) and the height is 66 inches (in). Their BSA is approximately 1.82 m2. So their dose for treating B-cell NHL would be 218 mg. This would be split into two doses over days 1 and 2 of a cycle.

Your doctor will watch to see whether you have serious side effects. If needed, they may pause your treatment, adjust your dosage, or permanently stop treatment.

Talk with your doctor if you have questions about your dosage.

Is Treanda used long term?

It depends. Treanda is usually recommended for use in treatment cycles based on the condition the drug is treating. For example, for CLL, you may follow a 28-day cycle and receive up to 6 cycles of treatment. For indolent B-cell NHL, you may follow a 21-day cycle and receive up to 8 cycles of treatment.

The length of your treatment will depend on several factors:

  • your condition
  • how you respond to treatment
  • how well you tolerate Treanda treatment

Your doctor can discuss your treatment schedule and how long you’re likely to receive treatment.

You receive Treanda by IV infusion. A healthcare professional gives the infusion, which is an injection into your vein over a period of time.

You’ll likely go to an infusion center, hospital, or clinic to receive the infusion. A healthcare professional will monitor you for any side effects during the infusion. They’ll also recommend whether to stay for some time afterward to continue watching for side effects.
